What if there were no pro-life movement? Prediction: abortion rates would plummet

The New York Times recently conducted a study of pro-life parental notification laws in the states and found they have little impact on the rate of abortion. Other studies of these laws found that they do succeed at something else: a dramatic increase in the number of late term abortions. It should be alarming to honest pro-lifers to find that the organizations they have happily sent donations off to are leading to such perverse outcomes. When are we seeing success? First, our country witnessed the sharpest decline in abortion under our first pro-choice president, Bill Clinton. Second, evidence shows that the countries with the lowest abortion rates in the world are those that have adopted the boldest pro-choice platforms (the ones with the highest abortion rates have adopted the strictest pro-life policies). It also interesting to note that the state experiencing one of the sharpest declines in abortion rates in our country is one of the most pro-choice, Oregon. The state has no mandatory delay laws, no parental involvement laws, and no public funding bans. The outcome? A 20% decline in abortion rates between 1994 and 2004. Maybe pro-lifers should be sending contributions to NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon instead.
